Sokka is so fucking important and his character development is super underrated. It is shown several times that Sokka is a sexist Dudebro because the patriarchy that exists in the Southern, and even bigger extent, the Northern Water Tribes, doesn’t value woman as equal to men (sound familiar?).
Women are expected to stay home and take care of the house work and do ‘women’s’ jobs like sewing and cooking and healing. That’s what Sokka grows up learning and observing - of course he absorbs and internalized that. Like the rest of the main characters of Atla, he is a child when the series starts, so he’s mimicking what he’s seen and learned. Just like younger teenage boys in the real world.
And then? Then he gets to travel, he learns about other cultures, he sees the woman he’s with and the women in these other places thriving. They aren’t staying home. His sister becomes a water-bending master, Toph is a wrestling champ and no one better tell her what to do, and yes, Suki and her team can kick his ass six ways from Sunday.
And Sokka grows. His thinking changes and evolves with all this new information. He realizes he was wrong, he apologizes, he changes his attitude and his behavior. And this was and is so fucking important - Sokka’s storyline was aimed at boys who were coming into their own and atla decided to show them how heroes treat women. They said look, this is how the good guys behave. Sokka was wrong, the society that raised him was wrong, and you have the power to learn and overcome and be better.
Sokka is so fucking important and I will die on this hill.

fat trans ppl deal with a lot of shit and its so sucky because some people will only support skinny trans ppl bc thats all they can conceptualize and accept when trans ppl in actuality come in all different types of bodies
if u dont support fat trans ppl the way u support skinny trans ppl u need to rethink what kind of “ally” u are.
As a fat trans woman this is so true even within the trans community. I’ve had so many other trans women invalidate me, be dismissive of my issues and experience, and so forth simply because of my size. It’s really fucking disappointing to run into.

When you pick up a sword for the first time you will be slow and awkward. This is frustrating, but refuse the temptation to try and become a “faster” fencer. Chasing after speed is like trying to catch smoke. If you try and pursue speed, all you will accomplish is haste. Haste is the enemy of 1st class fencing.
Speed is a lie the untrained mind tells itself when it sees an action it cannot follow. The truth is a combination of timing, control, and fluidity. Fluid motion, even done slowly, will always arrive before a hasty strike. Control will allow you to move without wasteful motion that will slow you down. Timing will eliminate the need to move fast almost entirely. There is no need to get somewhere fast so long as you get there at the right time.
